[1995] I Should Coco [Supergrass] ''FLAC''

I Should Coco

I stopped dead in my tracks the first time I heard "Caught By the Fuzz." It's so different, yet so familiar--an addictive blend of the best hooks, arrangements and early lyrics of the Who, Beatles ("Sofa [of My Lethargy]), and the Rolling Stones ("Sitting Up Straight"), and you have Supergrass. Unadulterated fun at full distortion, by 3 remarkably accomplished musicians. A real revelation.

[1970-1978] Yeti [Amon Düül II] ''FLAC (Vinyl Rip)''

Yeti

It's easy to over-think the meaningfulness of German rock (Krautrock) of the late 60s and early 70s, especially since its image has always been somewhat cerebral and cold in itself. Too much from the head, not enough from the crotch, some have complained. Its players meant for it to be "head" music certainly, and all that implies - there was an intention to the music, a commitment to experiment and improvisation sparked by the intellectual and chemical freedoms of the 60s. But at its best Krautrock conjured a mood distinct unto itself, which in its post-WWII teutonic heaviness could be as threatening and scary as any music ever made, and in its experimental innocence also convey a warmth and humor that speaks to the soul. The album Yeti does both these things. Amon Duul II's second record is a double-album monument of dark European soundscapes that possess a Led Zeppelin heaviness without an over-reliance on the blues or a dependency on rock cliches. The hard riffing has a much more exotic, eastern European or central Asian tone, and the improvisatory tenor, no matter how edited the music might have been in the end, contributes to the feeling that this is NOW music, that this music is happening in the present. Made in 1970, it could be straight out of any time in history. It's as heavy as Beethoven, as Gothic as, well, the Goths, as free from the restrictions of language as Can, as art-y as Roxy Music, as punk as you think you are, and ROCKS in its way like the most electric god of all time. So yeah, it's music that's actually worth thinking about.

[2000] Journey Inwards [LTJ Bukem] ''FLAC''

Journey Inwards

What some people appear to have not noticed is that although LTJ Bukem has been around for a while and has mixed and produced many records, Journey Inwards is in fact his first solo album. It mixes great Drum & Bass with a Jazz influence and is well worth the money. It is a great step away from the dark, and in my opinion boring, turn that most Drun & bass has taken. It has soul and feeling this is definately the way forward for Drum & Bass.

[2002] Colorful You [Miguel Migs] ''FLAC''

Colorful You

To say that the debut solo album from Miguel 'Petalpusher' Migs has been highly anticipated would be a major understatement as the hype has been building since early Spring and expectations float among the clouds. Migs' remixing credentials: solid. Big ups and deep head-bobs for his work on the Nude Dimensions series. People demand a lot from Miguel. While Naked Music co-founder Jay Denes' 'Beautiful Tomorrow' got the critic's nod earlier this year, would this album do the same? I'm not convinced.
Miguel knows his way around the studio as the production and arrangement are tight. But there is no definable peak and its consistent mid-tempo, soul groove will appeal mostly to the ladies. Deep heads out there will be disappointed. 'Days of Color' is the most qualified remixing candidate for the dance hall. 'Don't let me Down' and 'Waiting' was very R&B and pop-like. A stripped down version of 'Breakin It Down' is refreshing and almost as super soulful as 'The One'. Miguel's strength is clearly not in the lyrics with extra syrupy vocals such as 'before you break my heart, think it over.' Uh ' what? Next thing you know, will Migs be hanging out with Carson Daly on Total Request Live? No thanks. Not for me. I hate to knock Migs, but I think we were all expecting just a little more. After all, Miguel helped Naked Music set one of the standards when it comes to deep house flavors. The complete lyrics are included in the liner notes. Total time: 74 minutes. While I was hoping for some deep thumps and serious head-bobbing grooves, instead it was too sugary sweet for my taste buds.

[1988] Daydream Nation [Sonic Youth] VinylRip ''FLAC''

Daydream Nation

Daydream Nation is clearly Sonic Youth's breakthrough album. The songs are stretched out more giving more of an idea of what they sounded like live. Music at this time was stuck in pop doldrums. Sonic Youth, which had built up a cult following, after the release of this album were then signed by a major label and brought all the indie rock bands into the light eventually including one that was just getting a start in Seattle that would soon eclipse all of them in popularity.

[2009] Sparkler [Ringo Deathstarr] ''FLAC''

Sparkler

Shoegaze has been a term used to describe bands like Ringo Deathstarr since the early 1990's so it's definitely not a "new term." If you like My Bloody Valentine circa Isn't Anything or Jesus & Mary Chain those are gonna be the most major touchstones for Ringo Deathstarr. If you like this, you're gonna like both Colour Trip and Mauve (their more recent albums), if you liked those records and you don't have this then get it cause it's got front to back great songs on it too.

[1972] 666 [Aphrodite's Child] ''FLAC''

666

Vangelis was in an incredible state of inspiration when creating the songs for 666 on words by Costas Ferris. Some of the weirdest experiments in rock are complemented by some potential haunting hit singles, notably "Break", and "Aegean Sea", the latter being without doubt one of the finest examples of symphonic rock to date. It never got the attention it deserves because Aphrodite's Child had already broken up by the time this album was finished, singer Demis Roussos had already started his easy-listening solo career and Vangelis was already working on his first film scores. Still, this double album is one of the highest artistic peaks ever achieved in rock and if you're open to such a thing, this is a definitie must-have in your collection.

[1991] Just For A Day [Slowdive] ''FLAC''

Just For A Day

My Bloody Valentine's brilliant "Loveless" is easily the most famous and acclaimed shoegazer record, but this sparkling debut from Slowdive, is, in many ways, every bit as moving and beautiful. It is definitely one of my 10-15 favorite records of all-time. Written entirely by guitarist/singer Neil Halstead, "Just for a Day" stays true to its title, capturing alien ephemera within its breezy, hazy musical web. Guitars wash in and out like waves, drums and bass creep slowly along, and both Halstead and Rachel Goswell intone their beautifully insightful lyrics over the wondrously droning sea of sound. Besides its aesthetic beauty, "Just for a Day" possesses a moving, understated emotional punch, ranging from the drearily melancholic to the overflowingly redemptive. One of my friends listened to this album incessantly in the wake of his father's death, and he says it struck a chord so deep that he can no longer listen to it without being driven to tears. Powerful, resonant, and fleeting, "Just for a Day" is an astonishing listen.

This is the kind of moody electronic music that suits a long, fast drive down an empty freeway. I've always admired jori hulkkonen's work but this album contains a few tracks that are absolutely brilliant, namely #6 and #7. This album is a really good trip into electronic music.
Most of the tracks are electronic music, with a chiptune-like approach remembering video game tracks from the 16-bit period, especially Amiga and Sega Megadrive sounds.
Some of the tracks are more on the techno dancefloor side, but they are great too.
This release is really a must have imho, if you don't have it go get it before it disappear !

[2013] Cafe Del Mar Jazz I ''FLAC''

Cafe Del Mar Jazz

Cafe Del Marr Jazz maintains the reputation the Cafe Del Mar series has as a leader in chilled out, late evening, cocktails at sunset-type music. Here we have a jazzy twist on the theme. The vibe stays generally mellow but still throws in plenty of beat and percussion along with some gentle funk here and there, an occasional 50's feel, Enigma-type whisperings and quirky voiceovers - in other words plenty of variation and mood without straying too far from the dreamy feel-good laidback vibe Cafe del Mar is known. (Check out The Starseeds "Parallel LIfe" as a good example).

There are lots of moods represented here. Kraak and Smaak's Danse Macabre is a kind of Mobyesque take on jazz with repeated slightly disembodied vocals appearing amongst the instrumentation. The piano tinkles away on Montel La Rue's Adeus, followed by the lush Bossa Nova/orchestral rhythms of La Perla Noir's Inverno A Capri. Julien Sabre's Swimming Places completes the album and after a smouldering start erupts into a nice long piece of (almost) disco jazz. Fantastic.

[2001] Silent Hill 2 [Akira Yamaoka] ''FLAC''

Silent Hill 2

This soundtrack may be the single greatest collection of music ever devised by humans. Your life without having listened to this CD is meaningless. Each song is expertly and finely crafted art transcending any sort of specific genre style; songs so amazing you will eargasm in public creating an awkward situation between you and the bag lady at Walmart. He creates these songs out of happy thoughts, magic, and the souls of a thousand bigfoots. Don't try to understand how this level of amazingness is possible, but I assure you sir or ma'am, it is possible. If this CD was somehow personified it would be a creature worth its weight in metric, nuclear powered, Chuck Norris beards.

The soundtracks Akira writes are somehow better than the bestselling games. Without his music, the games would lose all integrity and sense of depth. Also, if this music hadn't been written, there would be nothing keeping the ghosts of a thousand crickets trying to enter your mind at bay.

Cerati is a genius, this album should be the best album of 99. No american band or songwriter can match to cerati"s talent right now. [2004] Codename Dustsucker [Bark Psychosis] ''FLAC''

Codename Dustsucker

I have been listening to Hex for almost 2 years now, and I've never gotten sick of it. The sounds that Bark Psychosis create were something new back then...and as my tastes have changed I've stuck with Psychosis Barking's more steadily than almost everything else in my collection. This is an expansion of their sounds, but not diluted, not refined, just a widening of an already grand vision. I love this. Like Mogwai except more inventive, like the best of Low except with a wider palatte, the most sublime of electronic acts. It's the 90's, but its palatable. Beside their pure mastery of tone, mood and texture, their greatest feat is their play of structure. Imagine Tool, except they love your ears, they want to express their angst by creating a world you want to live in and never leave. Yo La Tengo meets Bladerunner. It is an emotional experience. Whatever it is, ambient, postrock, I never tire of it. I'm going to get my hands on everything else they've done as soon as possible!

[1981] Deceit [This Heat] ''FLAC''

Deceit

Bizzare post-punk with a clear Krautrock influence, mainly descending from Can in the firmly percussive elemnts and the shimmering, occasionally atonal guitar lines. This album is more song based than their awesome debut, although no less devastatingly experimental. More, there are firm melodies and even some stabs at structured songs, but each is interspersed with odd, chanted stlye vocals, random instrumental meltdowns and claustrophobic, oppressive production. Something like a missing link between German experimental rock and UK post-punk, this awesome record transcends the (loose) boundaries imposed by either categorie to generate something unique and utterly engrossing.

[1997] Homogenic [Bjork] ''FLAC''

Homogenic

The whole world knows Bjork for being that crazy lady who attacked an interviewer, having worn a swan dress to a awards show and apparently being completely alien to this world. Although I agree her voice is eiree I wouldn't quite describe it as alien. After all she does sound very Icelandic. After two brilliant albums that shook musical boundaries Bjork returned with her true masterpiece "Homogenic". One thing always puzzles me about this album. Why didn't it sell? The production is flawless, the songs are Bjork's most dramatic (and that's saying something) and it leaves a strong impression after being listened to. Though the songs are a bit odder than on 1995's "Post" or her "Debut", they aren't so far out to alienate fans.
The album starts off with one of Bjork's most important songs, "Hunter". The production and delivery of this song are truly original. The electronic beat is incredibly catchy and different and Bjork sings in a more focused way than usual. The string arangements blend perfectly with the electronic beats and the lyrics are effective. The dreamy "Joga" is another true masterpiece. Bjork's voice amplifies all her emotions into this song. "Bachelorette" similarly is a dramatic moving piece with an epic feel. The album progresses through sadness to complete anger as shown on "Pluto", arguably Bjork's angriest songs. Some call this song unlistenable but I think it provides some much needed anger into the album. It is quite similar in style to "Declare Independence" from "Volta". "5 Years" is another angry song that becomes better with each listen. This song is nothing short of genius. The albums climax "All Is Full Of Love" takes us back to a much calmer Bjork, as though she vented all her anger out through the album. The song symbolises rebirth and is a beautiful way of ending the album. This song also gives us a continuation to the album after it "Vespertine".
The album holds together, almost as a concept album. It shows us a side to Bjork which isn't present in any of her other albums. This apparently is the album where Bjork reverted back into her shell, however, I feel this is her most important album to date. Although some of Bjork's albums take a lot of time to get used to ("Debut", "Vespertine"), this one grabs you on first listen and won't let you go. This is a masterpiece.

[1986] Infected [The The] ''FLAC''

Infected

This one-man band is sadly underrated and virtually unknown, possibly because Matt Johnson is too literate for the layman to stomach, or possibly just because he tends to take 5-year-long vacations once in a while. No matter. Infected was his first platinum disc, and rightly so. It's a commentary on the state of the world today - mainly Britain, since he lived there, but really it could apply to any "civilized" modern country. Not every song is explicitly about politics, but every one has the same mood and theme - that things have reached the point where they can't go on the same way any longer and something must be done. Every song burns with desperation as Johnson tries to find a way out but can't.
One thing I like about Johnson is that he's almost never arty - you know how a lot of the time bands are so self-conscious that they basically beat you over the head and scream "We're arty!" at you? Well, he never does that, but he still always remains very poetic. Even from the song titles you can see this - "Slow Train to Dawn", for instance. Johnson pegs the problems of the world so accurately it makes me wish I had thought of it, and sometimes even predicts further developments - "Sweet Bird of Truth", a song about a soldier on a doomed flight to fight in Africa, features the line "Am I to cry like a baby/Die like a man/When all the planet's little wars start joinin' hands?" Guess what events happened just a bit down the road in the Middle East?
When he's not singing about politics, he's singing about man's quest to find himself. The line "I'm just a regular guy" is used a lot throughout the album - in fact, the album tells a consistent story about "just a regular guy" whose life slowly is falling apart and who doesn't know what to do, asking "Tell me what I want in this world" on the first track. It's a very moving story, but the character in it doesn't find his answers (although The Mercy Beat provides a ray of hope for him) - Johnson leaves that to you.
The very dark, despairing lyrics are masked by airy (and really catchy) dance-pop, which may be seen as a drawback by some, but for others may serve to make the songs all the more memorable. If you liked Infected, I recommend Mind Bomb, The The's next album - if you liked that, I definitely recommend Infected. They're completely different works but at the same time they're remarkably similar, and many songs in Mind Bomb are almost sequels to songs from Infected (if you want to see how the relationship in "Slow Train to Dawn" ended, just listen to "Kingdom of Rain", another duet with another pop singer).
Lastly, if you really dig this album, know that a full-length movie was made called "Infected: The Video". Track it down on EBay (they usually sell about two or three copies every time you look) and get a copy - the videos are every bit as great as the music.

Innerspeaker

It's hard not to evoke comparisons to other bands when reviewing this CD because let's be honest, Tame Impala has perfectly captured the essence of several bands that have paved the way before them. But while playing Spot the Influence is an easy, winnable game with this band, that in no way means that their debut album "Innerspeaker" is in any way boring, predictable, or simply a re-hash of previous ideas. Instead, Tame Impala has taken the space rock vibes of early Pink Floyd, the bluesy riffs of Cream, the over-the-top psychedelica of The Flaming Lips, put them into an blender, and created something exciting and new.

[2005] Renaissance The Classics [V.A.] ''FLAC''

Renaissance The Classics

Three CD's of superb tunes - some old favourites, a lot of classics and a few cheeky popuar tunes thrown in for good measure. This an album that doesn't try to take itself too seriously by claiming to be "the album of classics" -there are too many to get on one box set - but offers up everything it says on the tin -a collection of Renaissance Classics. A renaissance night is unique experience and this is classics according to the renaissance experience and i think its absolutely perfect. Just right. With tunes like Last Rhythm and Gat Decor - Passion, this is an album if you were a serious clubber, a halfway clubber or an occasional clubber. It fits for everyone. [1983] Junko Ohashi - Point Zero ''MP3 320 Kbps''

Point Zero

Junko Ohashi is another one of those veteran singers who never ended up appearing daily or weekly on countdown shows or in commercials but still garnered a loyal fan base with her music and powerful voice. So, it's a bit ironic that her two biggest hits "Silhouette Romance" and "Tasogare, My Love" have her singing relatively quietly.
This is a really funky piece of J-pop that boasts an 80's classic: Dancin'. That song alone makes this record, but there's more: In Your Lovin, Caught in a Shower and Sensual Night shows more of her capability as a funk soul lady. Who would know that Japan had one of the funkiest record makers out there? Junko kicks ass even today; her career has been mostly excelent all of these years so it's a bit unfair that almost no one knows her outside of Japan.

[1969] Almendra [Almendra ] ''FLAC''

Almendra

Almendra must be, by all means, the first real rock album that ever saw the light in Argentina. This claim in no way intends to look down on previous releases by other bands: it responds to certain reasons I'm about to ramble about, the most important of all being the fact that it probably was the first explosion of creativity, the first audacious exploration of the Spanish tongue through rock music to take place in Argentina.
Luis Alberto Spinetta is naturally the soul of the album, supported gracefully by Edelmiro Molinari, Emilio Del Güercio (who also contributed with two of their own compositions: Color humano -later the name of Molinari's band - and Que el viento borró tus manos) and Rodolfo García. Spinetta's talent can be acknowledged from his early birth as a songwriter as a natural, innate one. Almendra is the sunrise of his unique poetry, perfect melodies and the beginning of this living legend of an artist. Bucolic pictures are combined with gray images of solitude, the innocence of a young daydreaming soul and the surrealistic eyes of a true poet. The cover art, another creation of the nineteen-year-old Spinetta, says it all: "el hombre de la tapa", which unifies the songs on the album in a conceptual manner (each song is related to either his eye, tear or toy arrow), though never depriving them of their identity, is itself an expression of melancholia.
The highlight of the album is definitely the opening track, Muchacha (Ojos de papel), one of the "songs from the sparkle of the one-thousand-year-old tear that the man from the cover cries". Balanced out by heavier and faster songs like Ana no duerme, but also accompanied by other laid-back jewels like Plegaria para un niño dormido, this is one of those love songs that are epic successes. It portrays the glory of a first love with a breeze of innocence and simplicity, never cheesy, never dull.

Rain Dogs

It's 1:30 AM. You're alone and it's hot, and ALL your sheets are firmly to the wind. Rain Dogs [and another drink] is all you need. Waits' style is a personal one, distinct and poetic, so trying to convince me he's got a best album is like trying to convice someone they like filet mignon more than grilled salmon! All his albums are great meals, so just because you're bound to prefer one to another doesn't mean your tastebuds are better than anyone else's -- the only way to know which you like best is to sample them for yourself. Because if you like Blues and standard arrangements, try Heartattack and Vine or Blue Valentine. If you like softer stuff or jazz hipsterism, try Heart of Saturday Night or Nighthawks. And if you like it more deviant, try Swordfish or Bone Machine. Waits's got something for everyone. And yet in answer to all the critics, if you want them all on one plate -- if you want pop and jazz, blues and acoustic, raveups and hoedowns, and lyrics you actually want to read like a book -- there's no way you can go wrong with Rain Dogs. I don't doubt this is the one album that would make ALL Waits fans' top 5. From there, you're on your own. Because like all great experiences in life, one person's worst might just be your best.

[1998] TNT [Tortoise] ''FLAC''

TNT

Where their debut had been a mixed and largely unstructured collection of leftfield soundscapes, followed by Millions Now Living's surprising love-letter to Krautrock, the third Tortoise release, the all instrumental TNT, was almost a lounge album - but lounge for thinkers. You certainly couldn't call this a rock album, any more than you could call it techno, acoustic, ambient or jazz, but Tortoise take all of those styles and more, building fabulously fat beds of bottom end, overlaid with gorgeous multi-layered guitars, vibes and sampled found sounds, and emerge with one of the last decade's most endlessly satisfying releases.
With it's frantic, sampled drum pattern, Jetty could almost be trip-hop, (in fact trip-hop is the lasting after-image of the album), Swung From The Gutters has a vague jazz structure to it, at the same time throwing in backward tape effects, I Set My Face To The Hillside combines - almost unbelievably - both Spaghetti Western and oriental themes and so it goes, constantly bewildering, constantly enchanting. And then there's the divine beauty of the title track... (sigh)
And it gets better with every listen.

[1973] Can - Future Days ''FLAC''

Future Days
